In any 21st century classroom, positive and prompt parent-teacher communication is integral to student success. As explorers of the best tools for the job, we couldn’t have been happier when we stumbled upon Three Ring, by Three Ring Inc. This app is an incredibly powerful tool that allows teachers to create and securely share digital portfolios of the students in their classroom.
The parents of our third grade students have fallen in love with how we’re using technology to connect our classrooms with the home environment. This application has transformed the way we interact and communicate with the parents of our students. Our favorite response to the use of this app was: “I feel like a fly on the wall in my child’s classroom.”
Three Ring is the easiest way to capture qualitative evidence of student learning. Three Ring allows teachers and students to document anything, organize it in seconds, and have it seamlessly available at school and at home.
Three Ring is your ultimate instructional resource and the easiest way to make portfolios, save artifacts for IEPs, demonstrate student learning in non-tested subjects and the Common Core and much more.

Three Ring is great tool that allows parents to have a glimpse into their child’s classroom without physically being there. Parents are able to initiate learning conversations with their child when they return home from school because they are able to see the activities and assignments that we update in real time throughout the day. For example: Perhaps one of your parents can’t make a field trip? No problem! Three Ring is excellent for capturing those exciting moments on field trips or during special events for parents who are unable to attend. And the best part? A wifi connection is not needed to capture each learning moment! Each document, image, or video file will be entered into a folder and uploaded as soon as you have a wifi connection – very valuable to us as educators who are using wifi-only devices.
Another alluring Three Ring feature is the fact that it honors student privacy. Parents can only view their own child’s content, not that of other students. This allows us to send pictures of graded assessments and personal pieces of work without the worry of others being able to view it. Once the picture, video clip, or audio recording are shared with parents, they may comment or ask questions right on the website to correspond with the teacher. The teacher also has the ability to make private, unshared notes about the assignment or activity for their own reference.
Three Ring has also proven to be a great tool for parent-teacher conferencing and student assessment. The app allows us to search our entire database of uploads by the student’s name, or through a specific tag, and Three Ring will immediately pull the searched content up to view. This can also be a very useful tool when completing evaluative assessments such as grading and/or report cards.
For us, Three Ring has created a sustainable and organized approach to student portfolios and parent interaction. It is a user-friendly and powerful tool that we highly recommend to all educators!
