Even More Fabulous, Free Apps is a continuation from an earlier post by TWA of More Fabulous, Free Apps. Finding great educational apps that are free, is not all that easy. So many new educational apps are released daily. Knowing that, “Not all apps are created equal,” keeps us on our mission to find the best educational apps for your mobile devices. Our line up for this review includes: Rover – an app that allows flash on your device and enables you to view videos, Sentence Maker – a clean, simple app that encourages proper use of language through sentence building and Phonics Genius – a thorough app featuring phonemic awareness to reinforce specific letter sound combinations.

Rover, by iSwifter Learn Inc –  Free education app recently updated and the only education Flash browser for your iPad designed for teachers and students. Rover is targeted toward grades K-12. It brings some of the best online learning content to your iPad. You can now access content not ordinarily available on the iPad (e.g. Flash). iSwifter has partnered with major education brands, like Discovery Education and our personal favorite classroom websites BrainPOP and UpToTen.com.  Rover is the only education Flash browser that enables interactive content on the iPad complete with a D-pad for optimal and intuitive game play. The content includes, but is not limited to videos as well as interactive games. Rover can turn your home or classroom into a fun, easy to use, and exciting learning lab! It is powered by the iSwifter platform (the world’s first cloud-based Flash streaming platform for mobile devices). They have listened to feedback from teachers, IT directors and administrators from schools to made their update include what was requested, like firewalls. Rover is COPPA compliant. They don’t save or store any data about users, and  Rover has content filters that keep students away from inappropriate content.  P.S. If that isn’t enough users can open PDF files in the Rover browser. Education has no limits, so why should your education browser!

Sentence Maker provides opportunities for 2, 3, 4 and 5 word combinations when creating sentences. BEST PART: it is totally customizable! It features the ability to change the pictures, words, sentences, sound and sentence length. It also allows options of sentence order (alphabetical or random), word order (right to left, left to right, any order), word case (upper, lower, capitalized), along with settings to turn on/off sound, sentence hints, visual hints, word hints or the tile magnet.

Phonics Genius, by Alligator Apps – This app is specifically designed to help students recognize and distinguish words by sounds. Phonics Genius is a reading teachers dream! All words are grouped by sounds that different letter combinations make. Letter/s-sound correspondences is one of the most common ways to learn how to read, and recognize words through phonemic awareness. This app is specifically designed to help students recognize and distinguish words by sounds in the beginning, middle, or end, of words. It has over 6,000 words strategically grouped into 225 categories. The professionally recorded words and super clean interface make this a terrific learning experience. This is one app that will be finding its way into the classroom.

* Just tried this app on the SmartBoard – I don’t know who was more excited the kids or me… the app gives students a chance to sound out very difficult words (that follow a pattern) EUREKA! – Jayne

I could not agree more with your choices. Rover opens up so many websites that children love to interact with. As for Alligator and Grasshopper Apps, you can count on them for quality apps that are appropriate for older children and teens that need to learn basic skills/concepts.
