UPDATE : TWA recently spoke with one of the special education teachers that field-tested this app and was told that Proloquo2Go was by far the most valued app he has used with his special needs population! Kudos to AssistiveWare!!!
Proloquo2Go, by AssistiveWare, is an app that has the reputation of being an absolute angel! It provides an easy solution, in a very cool package, to assist anyone who may have difficulty speaking. This communication system redefines AAC, (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) which is defined as “An integrated group of components, including the symbols, aids, strategies and techniques used by individuals to enhance communication.” As this definition states, communication encompasses more than just spoken words. It includes gestures, eye gaze, touch, body postures/movements, sign language, photographs, printed words, objects, pictoideographs, and Braille.
Proloquo2go is an alternate to expensive and bulky equipment and provides the same, if not better results. “It brings natural sounding text-to-speech voices, close to 8000 up-to-date symbols, powerful automatic conjugations, a large default vocabulary, full expandability and extreme ease of use to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.”
Teachers With Apps worked with Mike Darcy, a special education teacher, who spent two months using Prologuo2Go with special needs students. He used the app in his classroom and in his private practice, thanks to a license provided by AssisstiveWare for review.
For teachers, speech pathologists, parents, or anyone interested in learning about Proloquo2Go, they have recently added webinars to their website. A series of tutorials are available on YouTube. Here’s one:. Mike is emphatic when he talks about this app and how it really made a difference with one particular student. He’s adamant when he says this is by far the “BEST” app he has had the opportunity to work with. Mike also says, “The user friendly integration of key components in speech and socialization makes this app so beneficial for many children. Navigation of the program came natural to all my students, and the ability to personalize the program makes it exceptional. One particular student was using a dynavox system before I introduced him to Proloquo2Go on the iPad. His dynavox would be left stationary in one room of his house. The sheer size and weight of the system was not conducive to mobility around the house, and in the community, and therefore was not viewed as a necessity for the student. Proloquo2Go has become my student’s voice! He wants, and brings it with him everywhere he goes. He has been able to function independently throughout the community thanks toProloquo2Go. Maladaptive behaviors, as well as non-contextual vocalizations have decreased, and social opportunities, independent functioning, and language initiation has increased. I am very happy to have the opportunity to utilize this wonderful program. I look forward to giving many other children a voice thanks to Proloquo2Go.”
One thing that puts Proloquo2Go at the front of the pack is the ability to customize the program to an individual child’s exact needs. By going through your settings menu you can configure appearance, refine text to speech voice, pronunciation of words, and backup your vocabulary.
“AssistiveWare’s roots go back to 1996 when the KeyStrokes onscreen keyboard was created to help out a friend who had become paralyzed from the neck down due to a car accident. Since then, AssistiveWare has grown their selection of products, becoming the worldwide leader in Mac OS X and iOS software solutions for people with physical, vision, and speech and language impairments.”
All of this new technology has proven to be incredibly beneficial for the special needs child, especially those under the spectrum of autism. These are exciting times and we, at Teachers With Apps, are very excited to be part of it all!
